Morocco captain Romain Saiss leaves Portugal game in tears on stretcher in heart-breaking scenes for
Morocco captain and former Wolves defender Romain Saiss was left in tears on the bench in heart-breaking scenes as he picked up an injury.
His nation made history by beating Portugal to become the first African nation to book their place in a World Cup semi-final, but the game was tinged with heartbreak for Saiss as he was seen in tears on the bench.
The Besiktas man left the quarter-final tie against Portugal in the 57th minute, well ahead of schedule, and needed the help of a stretcher.
He was then seen looking emotional as his chances of continuing in his side’s incredible World Cup run now look in serious doubt.
Saiss has been a key figure in leading the African side to their first last eight appearance, and has been a rock at the back.
But he could end up being a huge loss in the last four where Morocco will face the winner of England vs France.
The 32-year-old spent six years at Wolves between 2016 and 2022, seeing the side rise from the Championship to the Premier League where they’ve become regulars.
During his career Saiss has amassed 70 appearances for his country, scoring two goals, with his latest the match-winner against Belgium in the group stages of this World Cup.
